Pattern:

At this point in my sewing journey I only sign up for a patten test if I really interested in the pattern because I already have so many patterns and a never ending list of projects in my head. The Sourdough Top and Shorts stood out to me because this summer I wanted to focus on coordinating sets. So I applied and was luckily chosen.

Let’s talk about the top first. It’s semi-fitted top includes four views and they all feature a high boat neck, armsyce darts, center front and back seams. All but view D is a crop length. Views A & B have a gathered hem, either by drawstrings (A) or elastic (B) and the neck and armholes are finished with bias tape. The neckline and hem of views C & D are finished with facings. Both of them have hems that flare away from the body.

While the center and back seams could be eliminated by removing the seam allowance and cutting both pieces on the fold. I think the seams allow for a variety of options; you could topstitch the seam with a contrast thread, color block, pattern block or use a stripe fabric and play with the grain.

The top came together really nicely. I think I had a bit of an issue with the hem facing lining up but that was user error as I often have that problem. During testing the darts were a bit high and the neckline a bit narrow, but both of those issues were addressed in the final pattern. I dislike neck facings in general but I did use them here per the instructions and not surprisingly I prefer the view that uses bias tape and I’ll do that in the future.

Now on to the bottoms…there are essentially two pants views (A&B) and each of those views have a shorts option (C&D). View A/C features a tiny paperbag ruffle waistband, drawstrings at both side seams, inseam pockets and a faux fly. The pants (A) have a deep 6” hem, while the short (C) have a 3” inseam with an optional slit hem. View B/D are more beginner friends with angle pockets and a drawstring tie at the center front. The pants have a 2” hem and the shorts have a 3” inseam.

My shorts are View C though I omitted the faux fly. The side ties are what drew me to this view because they’re different and cute. I also really like the detail of the split at the hem and I think I will add this on other shorts.

Fabric:

You’ve seen this fabric before when I sewed Simplicity 9757 and it’s a duvet cover from Ikea. I grabbed this king size duvet cover for just $8.99! So for I’ve made this set and the dress I linked and I still have plenty of fabric for one or maybe even two more. I really like the colors in this oversized floral design and the content is great for apparel (54% cotton and 46% viscose/rayon). I thought it would be great for the set as I could wear the two pieces together or separate.

I was a little worried that the scale of the print was too large for a crop top and shorts, but I feel that it worked.

Modifications:

I didn’t make any.

Lessons Learned:

The split hem is a cute little extra touch.
