Missed the Christopher John Rogers drop? Sew your own!

This drop from Old Navy in collaboration with Christopher John Rogers is chef’s kiss. I love the bright colors, the denim, the greens. The mix of knits and wovens, stripes and dots, I love it all. However as a sewist who always looks at something and thinks “ hmmm, I could make that” I have some recommendations to make your own, because all of these pieces will sell out.

The Striped Shirtdress

I love a shirt dress, so it’s no surprise that I’m in love with this. The stripes, the midi length, the ability to wear it as a dress or layered over a jumpsuit! There are so many good shirtdress patterns, but my primary suggestion is Simplicity 8546. Mostly because I’ve sewn a monochromatic version of this myself, here. The only noticeable differences are the CJR has dropped sleeves where the Simplicity patterns are set it and the pattern has cuffs where the ready to where version has bands.

Other options are Simplicity 3065 which has more of a dropped shoulder, but it has a waist seam and doesn’t button up to the top. Also check out McCalls 7387, which has multiple lengths. McCalls 8030 is a favorite of mine, see here, but it’s sleeveless.

If you prefer indie patterns try Closet Core Kalle which is also sleeveless but there is a sleeve expansion that could allow you to achieve the dropped long sleeve. Other indie options are Love Notions Aria or Cashmerette Winvale.

The Halter Dress

When I saw this halter dress my first thought was Fashion Therapy’s Monica dress. Now hang with me it’s not exact as it features a empire waist instead of a dropped one, but the neckline is similar and the zipper details are everything.

The Bomber Jacket

Bomber jackets to me are more for fall, but this is a good luck to achieve the same stand up collar, elasticized band and concealed zip front opt for the newly released True Bias Tobie. Choosing the collar from view B and the slant welt pockets of view A will result in close to an exact replica.

The Twist off the Shoulder Top

I really only have one recommendation for this top, because it’s so spot on. It’s the Addington by StayStitch Patterns. The off the shoulder twist is almost identical and it offers a dress length which is also include in the Christopher John Rogers collection.

The Crop Tee

I love a crop tee so as soon as I saw this one, slightly boxy with a dropped shoulder I thought of the Jesse Tee by True Bias. I’ve sewn it a few times, here and here. The Jesse is free so it’s great pattern to try.

Closet Core offers a free tee as well, the Core tee, that is worth downloading.

The Halter and Drop Waist Skirt

Drop waist skirts and dresses are very on trend! Simplicity 9958 isn’t an exact match but it’s close. The skirt has gathers instead of pleats but you can make that change with very little modification. And while the top is a different design it shares the peplum, keyhole and halter details. I’d argue I prefer the Simplicity top.

Striped Knit Skirt Set

This set is actually just a simple knit long sleeve top and midi fitted skirt, the colorful striped fabric is what makes it stand out.

Unfettered Patterns has an almost exact dupe for this look, though they have been flagged by some as a AI pattern maker. Their designs are free, though the instructions are sold separately, so it might be worth a try.

New Look 6815 is an option if you use Views A & C. Also check out Simplicity 8982.

Otherwise you can use any long sleeve tee pattern and any knit skirt pattern to copy this set.

The Basic Tank

This top is available in three colors: In the Navy, Magnolia and Dark Lichen. Some options include striped binding as an accent. The Blomma Tank by Paradise Patterns is a free pattern that would achieve a similar look.
