Overview:

If you watched my Seams Like a Plan video you know this sweatsuit was on my fall to-sew list. So far it’s the only project I can cross off from that video and it’s already winter. Still some progress is better than none. If you enjoy videos, you can sew along with me.

Pattern:

I love a matching set and I’ve been trying to sew more everyday, practical pieces. So a sweatsuit was a no brainer. I debated a bit on which pattern to use for the top, but finally landed on the Casey sweatshirt. It’s a FREE pattern by Sew Much Ado that features a cropped length, drop shoulders and neck, sleeve and hem bands.

Access to the pattern doesn’t require a newsletter sign up, although I’m sure Abby would appreciate it, so you can go straight to the link and download. For a free pattern it has an impressive size range from XS-XXL and the file includes print at home, projector and copy shop options!

The instructions can be found on their blog post, which isn’t ideal to me. However, you could always print the blog post or copy and paste the instructions to a word doc for later use.

This is truly a beginner friendly pattern! Everything came together easily. I sewed and XXL (44” bust) and the fit was as advertised.

The Winnie pants are my favorite knit, pull-on pant. They offer several features: a front pintuck, medium or high rise, three waistbands, six lengths and optional slant pockets. I’m always going to opt for a high rise and pockets, I also chose the elastic waistband, but omitted the drawstring and the 30” inseam. I sewed a size yellow.

As I’ve made the Winnie before they came together easily. The “trickiest” part was creating the channels and threading the elastic and honestly that was more annoying because I’m impatient.

The cropped length of the Casey works lovely with the high waist version of the Winnie. Both pieces are comfy to wear while still allowing me to look pulled together. I feel the pintuck on the pants really dress up the look. Though I didn’t plan it my Sam Edelman Langley sneakers perfectly finish off the monochromatic look.

With the erratic winter that Georgia is having I’ve worn this set more than a few times. . So much so that I must make another version. I just need more French terry or maybe even a drapey ponte.

Fabric:

I believe this French terry is the only fabric I bought during the closing sale of Joann. I snagged the end of the bolt which was about two yards from one locations. Red is my favorite color so it grabbed my eye. I figured I could make a lightweight sweatshirt. Then I stumbled upon another end of bolt piece that was about 3 yards at another store. I’m so glad I found the second piece because it allowed me to sew this set. It’s lightweight, but opaque with good stretch and recovery.

Lessons Learned:

  • I need more sets like this!!!!
