Spring 2023 Sewing Plans

New season means a new vision board!

Lets see what I have planned for this spring. If you want to learn how I made these vision boards, check out my How-To Video.

Separates

I’m trying to continue sewing more separates even though as the temps rise all I want to wear are dresses. Perfect for those two days I go into the office, I can see Simplicity 9714 in a solid linen. I don’t think I have enough linen in my stash so I need to decide which color will be my go to this season or which hue is missing from my wardrobe. All I know is not white, as lovely as it is, because I know I will never where it. I’m leaning yellow/mustard.

Simplicity 9756 really speaks to me and I want to make all three pieces in a zebra print linen from Fabric Mart that I’ve been holding in my stash. There are so many options. All three pieces can be worn together like on the pattern envelope or the halter top can be worn with the pants as a matching set or the top and bottom can be paired with a solid or the shirt can be worn alone as a shirt dress (though I may need to lengthen it).

If you watched my Early Spring Haul video you know I almost passed on Know Me 2013, but I’m glad I didn’t. I had an idea to color block this set, but I can’t decide on the color placement so I’m likely going to start with a navy ponte knit I have in my stash. I’m also thinking I’ll omit the buttons, unless I come across some cute ones in my stash.

Last year I grabbed two black history month print cottons from Joann (here, here). I cut out McCalls 8324 right when it came out, but never got around to sewing it up so it back on the board. It took me a bit longer to decide what to sew with the second, but I’ve decided to sew up Closet Core Kalle crop top.

In case you missed it Close Core has created a sewing community, called the Crew, that releases a simple sewing pattern monthly. Marigold, a dolman sleeve sweater, is the February pattern that I have not got around to sewing yet. I have a navy and white stripe DBP knit remnant piece from my local Fine Fabrics that will be perfect for the this top.

I’ll likely make more tops that this because I’m pretty much addicted to making tees like Closet Core Crew, True Bias Jesse and Simplicity 9550 . I love these patterns as they each take about a yard and sew up quickly.

Last up on the separates list is the somewhat newly released Chalk and Notch Isle jeans which are right up my alley, high waisted with wide and flared options. I am going to make the wide legged version first with some medium-dark washed denim that I’ve held onto for a while.

One - Pieces

The plan is for me to pair this gorgeous red floral print rayon challis with Beaute J’adore’s Know Me 2016 dress in the shorter length of View B and the short sleeves of View A. However I think this fabric is gonna fall in the category of “I love it so much that I don’t want to cut it” so I need to act quickly.

I already talked about Simplicity 9756 in the separates, but I think the top view could work well as a dress.

McCalls 8035 made the list because I’ve sewn the maxi version before and love it so I was thinking a shorter version would be nice to have. and another Closet Core Crew exclusive pattern, the Periwinkle, are blank on this board because I haven’t decided on fabrics. I’m trying to shop from my stash, but nothing was speaking to me as I was making this board.

A few makers, namely Faith, sewed up this Simplicity 9469 top hacked into a dress and I want one too. I have this fun lemon and stripe print challis in my stash. It screams spring so I think this is a good pairing.

This new Closet Core Crew exclusive pattern, Periwinkle shirtdress, reminds me of McCalls 8030 which I sewn before (here) which I really loved. I had to dig a bit in my stash to find this leaf print linen fabric that I had originally purchased year ago to make a second Closet Core Fiona (see the first)

I’ve already sewn Simplicity 9701, (here) and I know I’ll make at least two more. I actually wanted to use a army green mesh striped knit the first time but I didn’t not have the skin tone fabric for the lining. Still don’t, but I think I’m going to grab for this new shapewear fabric from Joann for the lining. We’ll see I need to go to the store to select the right shade.

McCalls 8340 is another pattern I’ve had since it came out but have sewn. I’m trying to decide if I should go for a two tone or a solid look. What do ya’ll think?

I want to see some pattern mixing in black and white for Simplicity 9224. Not sure if it will be the different scale houndstooth prints or a black on white/white on black polka dots mix up.

Lastly I need another Zadie jumpsuit (first one here) and though there are so many options - solid, prints, colorblocking - I’m going to start with a deep green stretch woven I’ve had in my stash for years.

Whew, that’s a lot. I already know I won’t get to all of these projects, but I’m shooting for the moon to land among the stars. If I make half of these I’ll be thrilled. I also know that inspiration will hit me and I’ll add a few things that aren’t here. Stay tuned to see what I do make. Subscribe to my newsletter so you don’t miss anything. What are you sewing this season?
