Tips for Sewing with Knits

Some find sewing with knits troublesome, especially at first.

Make it easier on yourself. Follow these tips

  1. Start with stable, mid-heavy weight knits.

Like a ponte or brushed polyester. These fabrics tend to roll less and won’t slip as much as stretchier, lighter knits (such as ITY or jerseys).

  2. Use a ballpoint or stretch needle.

Using the correct needle is always important. Also be sure to use the correct weight.

  3. Use a zig-zag stitch if you don't have a serger.

Having a serger makes working with knits easier, but owning one isn’t neccessary for sewing knits. A narrow zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine allows your seam to stretch a bit your stitches don’t pop while wearing the garment.

  4. Use hem tape to stabilize hems

To avoid wavy hems use hem tape to secure the hem before stitching. This prevents stretching which causes the waviness

  5. Use a twin needle for hems

A twin needle allows even more stretch and mimic the look of a coverstitch (the finish you find on store bought tees)
