Summer Separates Navy Collection: Gingham Shorts

Hopefully you saw my Fabric Mart Fabricista post that went live this past Saturday! If not, check it out here to see all four pieces I created for this mini collection. In this post I'm going to share to other tops with these shorts along with my full pattern review.NL6560&M6965TieThis pattern has been in my stash for a few years and unfortunately it is now OOP. I grabbed it because I like the flirty hem for the shorts and the fullness of the pants. I've actually started these shorts before, but they've been a UFO for a year or so. This time around I made sure to finish them and I'm so glad I did! I love these shorts.NL6560&M6965BAckThis gingham linen is sold out now, but I love the linen from Fabric Mart (here) and have used for several garments (here, here, here). Linen in general is great to work with and this was no exception. The slight stiffness of this linen allows the flared cut of the shorts to show, but they would also be great in swishy rayon!
I paired these shorts with the top from Simplicity 8927 and New Look 6560 which are a part of my mini collection. They also work well with these navy and white basic tees from Target. A bright color like red or chartreuse would take these up a notch. These shorts work well with flats or wedges or heeled sandals. I'm definitely going to finish off my UFO pair.M6965 CrotchI only made two changes. I lengthened the back crotch by about 1/2" as per usual for me. Secondly, I added in seam pockets! I'm honesty not sure why pockets weren't included in this pattern, but they are super easy to add. Simply grab a pocket piece from another pattern and play with the placement along the side seam. Because these shorts are rather short I did have to alter my pieces to be shallower so that the pockets didn't hang below the hem.Pattern: McCalls 6965Pattern Description: Flared shorts, culottes and pants (very loose-fitting through hips) have contour waistband, princess seams, back zipper and narrow hem.pocketsSizing: 6-14, 14-22Difficulty: 2/easyFabric Used: Dark navy and white gingham linenDoes it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope? YesWere the instructions easy to follow? VeryLikes:  Flattering cut, minimal yardage, easy to fitDislikes: None. Except as always I wish there was a printed waist measurement.Pattern alterations or any design changes made: I added about 1/2″ to the back crotch and added pockets.Would I sew it again? Yes, I'm definitely going to finish that UFO pair.Would I recommend it to others? Definitely, great intro to pants. Conclusion: Cute, quick sew shorts.
