Criss Cross Color Block - McCalls 7538

Like many patterns that sit in my pattern drawers, I've been meaning to sew this dress for a while now. I knew I wanted to color block this dress but didn't have any particular fabric selected so it kept getting pushed down on my To Sew list.A while back I decided to plan out my next few makes and started digging through my stash. Finally I came across this black and white ITY fabric that was left over from a pair of palazzo pants I made years ago and decided to pair it with a black knit piece that was also left over from a another project. If you follow me you know I love B&W and this dress is no exception. Plus we all know that black is slimming so what better color to criss-cross the mid section!Since I was working with remnants and making up my own view (basically View B with the View C front bodice) my pattern placement didn't follow the suggested layout. This might be why I totally messed up, the dress was almost done before it started. I cut the front and back of the skirt first because they were the largest pieces, but when I got to the front and back bodice pieces I did not have enough fabric left to cut them on the fold.Instead the front and back bodice are actually two pieces. I folded the pattern tissue in half and added 1/2" seam allowance to the center fold. Thankfully with this busy print you can't quite tell. Besides that error on my part the dress sewed up quickly and easily. I highly recommend that you pin your pattern pieces to your fabric as you cut it because the criss-cross section could be confusing when it comes time to sew it all together.I do plan to make this again in two solid colors, probably for fall in a ponte or velvet. What colors should I use? Maybe a navy and teal? or ruby and navy? what about burgandy and eggplant? I could see this dress is a tricolor what about red, white and black?
