Abstract Houndstooth Print Off The Shoulder Dress - Mimi G Tutorial

S1613midisideI needed a dress for a party back in October and I thought of this sexy little off the shoulder dress from Mimi G. My first attempt at this  Off-the-Shoulder Dress was the flared maxi version sometime last year. The grey jersey fabric I used was too thin and showed ALL my flaws. I later lined the body of the dress with a performance knit but never truly finished the dress. (note to self: FINISH it).patternenvelope1I knew I wanted to make the shorter version out of a thicker knit one day and this party seemed like a great reason to finally do that. As a bonus I already knew it was a fairly quick sew which was great because I was short on time (as usual).I ordered this multi print houndstooth ponte from Fabric Mart when they were offering 50% off ponte. I’m not sure why but it stood out to me and I just had to have it, I bought 4 yards because I had no idea what it would become. I still have 2yds + left so know that you will be seeing it again. I chose it because I thought the busy pattern would be best suited for a simple silhouette and I hoped it would camouflage some imperfections (read:my tummy).S1613midifrontMimi G doesn't offer this as a pattern but as a video tutorial. She takes you through how to modify a commercial pattern to achieve this look. The tutorial is amazing and the skills taught in the video can be applied to other future projects. I think it helps, newbies especially, to sew along with someone and this tutorial does just that. She walks through how to draft both the midi and maxi versions and sews the whole project right along with you. I highly recommend it!S1613midibackI didn’t actually use the tutorial this time as I knew how to alter the pattern to achieve the look I wanted already. I decided to make it hit above the knee so I could dance and show off the gams!s1613midiblaz2I wanted to wear this to work but off-the-shoulder is definitely not work appropriate! Thankfully I was able to pull the neckline up high enough to give the illusion of a deep scoop neck and then I paired it with a blazer.S1613midiblazThis is a great dress that can easily go from office to dinner. Add a blazer, tights and booties for a more conservative day look. Then when the sun sets ditch the tights and blazer and swap the booties for some stilettos. Two looks is one!Pattern: Mimi G Off The Shoulder Dress TutorialPattern Description: This is a paid video tutorial that walks you through each step of modifying a big 4 commercial pattern to achieve this look.Sizing: self-drafted to fit you!Difficulty: 2/easyFabric Used: Ponte from fabric martDoes it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope? Yes!Were the instructions easy to follow? Extremely easy!Likes: I really like the off the shoulder look. This tutorial shows you how to make a fitted (you could adjust it to any length) as well as a maxi flared version. You could also easily adjust your sleeve length from short to long or anywhere in between.I love the fact that this is a video tutorial that walks you through each step of making the garment.Dislikes: None.Pattern alterations or any design changes made: I chose to make the fitted version to hit above the knee with this fabric.Would I sew it again? Yes probably in a solid for a fitted midi length dress. Any likely again in the flared version.Would I recommend it to others? Yes!Conclusion: I think this a highly versatile style and you can never go wrong with Mimi G.
