Violet Skater Dress - McCalls 6754

20140901_172721It should be no surprise that Mimi G led me to this pattern. I loved her striped version of the peplum top. I however was still very much a newbie when I made this and knew matching stripes was going to be a headache. So I went with a solid ponte. I also opted for the dress (view D) as I’m still unsure about peplums on me. I probably should’ve tried View B first but oh well. The bodice did come together simply despite the multiple pieces since I wasn’t matching a pattern. My biggest issue was that the only thread that I could find that matched my fabric was Sulky. As a newbie I didn’t know that that shouldn’t be used for “construction” stiches just embroidery and topstitching, I believe, so my garment kept snapping stiches when I wore it. I basically had to redo the whole thing after 1 or 2 wears. Next time I’ll know.PhotoGrid_1400511554175Pattern: M6754Pattern Description: Close-fitting and flared tops and dresses have neckline variations, elasticized (seamed) waist, and narrow hems. B: underlined. C and D: bias bodice, and side front seams.Pattern Sizing: XS-M, L-XXLDifficulty: 1/Newbie (especially if you do view A or B and avoid stripes)Fabric Used: Violet ponte knit from Fabric Mart (sold out)Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes.Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. They were straightforward. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like circle skirts, the bodice (D) was interesting and it didn’t require a zipper. I didn’t like that the bodice was short, to me anyway. The sleeves were wide.Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did the dress from View D but used the short sleeves from view C. I did take in the sleeves quite a bit but I expected this after Mimi’s review.Would you sew it again? I may try to tackle matching stripes.Would you recommend it to others? Yes.Conclusion: I think it turned out good although I don’t think the fit is perfect. Next time I will cut a small or a smedium and add a zipper for a better fit as well as add an 1” or so to the bodice.Total cost*: $11.39Pattern                                          =  $ 0.99Violet Ponte   2 yds @ $5.20 2yd = $10.40*ponte was purchased on sale from fabricmartfabrics.com. 35% off $7.99/yd.20140901_172732 20140901_172709
